Itchy Feet During Pregnancy : Tips To Get Relieve


Most women often experience itching during pregnancy. Some of these itching could be mild or severe. And one part of their body where they experience this itchiness is the feet. If you are pregnant and you experience itchy feet, then just know that you are not alone on this as there are several other women who do too. Sometimes your feet could itch at night. Itchy feet during pregnancy at night could be very frustrating as your sleep could be affected. Itchy feet during pregnancy sometimes gets serious during the last trimester of pregnancy. One reason that may be responsible for this is a condition known as obstetric cholestasis or cholestasis of pregnancy. Cholestasis most times relieves the woman soon after delivery.
Cholestasis of pregnancy is caused when large amount of pregnancy hormones affect the normal flow of bile in the gall bladder by slowing or stopping the flow of the bile. When this happens, it causes bile acid to build up in the liver which can spill in the bloodstream. Cholestasis is a liver disease that occur only in pregnancy.

Some of the symptoms of cholestasis during pregnancy include the following:
  • Severe itching especially in the feet or hands that could get worse at night.

  • Depression.

  • Fatigue or exhaustion.

  • Dark-colored urine.

How To Stop Itchy Feet During Pregnancy

To get relief from this kind of condition, here is what to do:
  • Avoid bathing with hot water as your skin can get dried thereby causing more itchiness on the skin of your feet. but, bathing with cold water or lukewarm water will give you relief from such itchiness.

  • Avoid soaps that are harsh. this kind of soaps cause your skin to become dry. Instead use mild soaps that has moisturizer when bathing or washing your feet.

  • Apply moisturizer on your feet to prevent it from getting dried quickly. The best time would be after bathe or washing of the feet when the skin is still damp. You must towel gently the feet immediately after bathe or wash before applying moisturizer.

  • Don't go out in the sun when the sun is intense as it could increase the rate at which your feet itch.
